Saving Mama, One Pee at a Time
Hi. Iâm Sassy, and Iâve got news about my Mama.
Iâm what youâd call a dog of many cultures (and questionable ancestry), weighing in at 26 poundsâprime size for âemotional support bestie,â âfitness trainer,â and âprofessional poop-bag logistics manager.â
But let me tell youâthis last week hasnât been a walk in the park. Mama is back in chemo-land. Two months shy of 69 and wrestling lymphoma again. She says sheâs âbeen badder and gooder, thinner and fatter, younger but never this old before.â To me? She mostly smells like hand sanitizer, Band-Aids, and pure stubborn.
Now, Mamaâs on this kick about âflushing the poison out.â She downloaded an app with a cartoon llama that cheers every time she drinks water. A llama. As if my tail wagging isnât motivation enough! Anyway, sheâs guzzling 100 ounces a dayâwhich means Iâve now memorized every bathroom within a two-mile radius.
But apparently water isnât enough. Studies show (insert Mamaâs dramatic eye roll here) that exercise helps. And thatâs where I come in. She straps on her shoes, clips on my leash, and declares weâre going on âshort walks of torture and exhaustion.â
I call them SWALKSâSassy Walks.
And hereâs how they go:
- Minute 1: Mama is all business. Iâm busy sniffing the grass like itâs a fine wine tasting.
- Minute 5: Mama is huffing, cussing at âfucking studies.â Iâm still auditioning pee spots.
- Minute 10: Mama looks like sheâs negotiating with Death. Iâm prancing like a show pony.
- Minute 20: Mama is swaying like a drunk flamingo, but donât worryâI know the way home.
Chemo is rough. My Mama feels awful. But sheâs still out hereâsweating, swearing, stumbling forward. And Iâm her furry sidekick: sniffing, peeing, cheerleading, making sure she doesnât face-plant on the neighborâs driveway.
So, if you see us out there on a SASSY WALK, give Mama a honk, a waveâor, better yet, toss me a chicken-flavored treat. Weâll take all the encouragement we can get.
Because adventures arenât always mountain hikes or big vacations. Sometimes theyâre just a stubborn woman and her determined little dog, trudging through the Georgia heat, refusing to quit.
And donât worryâIâve got more stories. Next time I steal the keyboard, Iâll tell you about the killer mosquitos the size of Labradors.
đŸ Until then, nose boops and tail wags,
Sassy
